Chroma: Solo Exhibition featuring Jeremy Flick

The Silva Gallery x Latela Curatorial is pleased to present Chroma, a solo exhibition of new and recent paintings by Jeremy Flick. The exhibition will be on view at The Silva DC at 1630 Columbia Rd NW, Washington, DC 20009, from June 15 through October 8, 2023. A public reception will be held for the artist on September 15, 2023 from 6-8 pm.

Embracing a minimalist aesthetic that emphasizes the primary variables of painting, Flick’s paintings are characterized by their formal precision and systematic approach. Aptly titled Chroma, which refers to the “purity or intensity of color,” this exhibit highlights Flick’s strong command of color and careful consideration of the complex relationships between color, shape, and space.

Continuing his rigorous pursuit of abstraction, the sculptural paintings in this exhibition depart from the traditional rectangular format, allowing them to interact more fully with the surrounding environment. Through arrangements of overlapping geometry of vibrant, transparent color, Flick creates visually dynamic compositions evoking multiple depths and perspectives, inviting the viewer to engage in various interpretations and meanings.

Chroma by Jeremy Flick is on display at The Silva Gallery x Latela Curatorial June 15 - October 8, 2023. Located at The Silva DC: 1630 Columbia Rd NW, Washington, DC 20009. Open Mon-Sat 10am-5pm and Sun noon-5pm. A public reception will be held for the artist on September 15, 2023 from 6-8pm (RSVP). All artwork displayed is available for purchase.

Two expressive painting shows hosted by apartment buildings reveal just how much color a gallery presentation can bring to residential living — and vice versa

Review by Kriston Capps, Aug. 30, 2023

…“Chroma” comprises seven hard-edge abstract paintings. At a glance, Flick might remind viewers of Washington Color School luminaries such as Kenneth Noland or Thomas Downing. Flick shares some of that DNA: His paintings feature overlapping polygons of color that blend in rich, sometimes unexpected ways. Yet Flick’s shaped canvases break with the pure experiments of the Color School generation, revealing a sculptural departure from the simple plane…With his shaped canvases, Flick favors an approach by the likes of Charles Hinman or Frank Stella, while his dedication to color theory harks back to the square-within-a-square painter Josef Albers. Flick’s work is a dialogue with this older generation of modern artists, and the results, however vibrant, can feel dated. The right word might be vintage: There’s nothing musty about Flick’s work, and viewers who can never get enough geometric abstraction will find a lot to like…
